TriHealth Hospitals Recognized with National Safe Sleep Certification

Cincinnati, OH - Bethesda North Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital, both of Cincinnati, OH, have been recognized for their best practices and education on infant safe sleep. Both hospitals earned the highest level of the National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification.

22610-Cribs-for-Kids-Seal_GoldTriHealth hospital providers are committed to reducing infant sleep-related deaths, which account for the loss of more than 3,500 infants per year in the United States. Bethesda North Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital have established an infant safe-sleep policy, model infant safe sleep and continue to partner with Cribs for Kids.

“Our team from Bethesda North Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital worked very hard this past year to implement this program,” said Tonya Johanneman, Director of Perinatal Services at Good Samaritan. “It has been a great collaboration, and I thank everyone involved. The outcome of reducing infant mortality through some of these initiatives really makes their efforts worth it.”

The hospitals were named Gold Certified Safe Sleep Champions, which means they:

• Have implemented a safe-sleep policy
• Train staff on guidelines and modeling safe-sleep practices for patients
• Educate parents on the importance of safe sleep
• Replaced regular receiving blankets with wearable blankets to avoid loose bedding in cribs
• Affiliate with Cribs for Kids
• Provide community and media outreach
• Undergo annual evaluations through internal audit or PDSA cycles

“We know that consistent education can have a profound effect on infant mortality, and this program is designed to encourage safe sleep education and recognize those hospitals that are taking an active role in reducing these unnecessary deaths,” said Michael H. Goodstein MD, FAAP, Neonatologist, Medical Director/Research, Cribs for Kids, Director of York County Cribs for Kids Program.
