SAEM 2015 | "Dodge" Interview Mishaps With These 5 Tips

If you're an emergency medicine resident planning to attend the upcoming Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Annual Meeting in San Diego, you are probably gearing up to participate in the SAEM Dodgeball Tournament on May 14, 2015.

Dodgeball is a celebrated tradition in San Diego and SAEM has asked residency programs from across the nation to form teams for a double elimination tournament. Are you one of the 8 teams competing?

Whether you'll be competing or watching from the sidelines this is an event you definitely won't want to miss. Share your thoughts on the tournament using #SAEM15 on social media and when you're not dodging balls on the court be sure to visit EMrecruits at Booth #302 in the exhibit hall to learn more about our emergency medicine jobs with independent, physician-owned groups from across the nation.

To help prepare you for an interview with one of our physician groups, we've compiled the following list to help you "dodge" interview mishaps.

"Dodge" Interview Mishaps With These 5 Tips

  • DODGE uncertainty about your career path by completing a self-assessment.

Plunging into the job market without clearly defined goals makes little sense as interviewers quickly eliminate candidates who are unsure of their direction. According to EMRA, 70% of Emergency Medicine residency graduates will leave their first job within the first two years due to a lack of clear cut career and personal goals during the initial job search. • DUCK past potential interview blunders by being prepared.

Do your homework and remember that there is always competition for a good opportunity.  The more prepared you are, the easier it will be for you to stand out against the competition. Be sure to confirm your itinerary to make sure you have accurate directions / arrive on time and dress professionally to make a lasting, positive first-impression. Last, but most important, concentrate on being yourself and finding out if this position is right for you.

  • DIP by your competition by making a lasting impression.

After your Curriculum Vitae (CV), the interview is your best opportunity to impress the group / organization. This is your first and best opportunity to make a lasting impression, so we suggest the following strategy: 1) prepare a selective presentation of your background, 2) develop thoughtful answers to potential interview questions, and 3) consider your goals in relation to what the job offers to be able to discuss both of these topics.

  • DIVE into the conversation with the right interview questions to ask.

You'll want to use your own judgment on which questions to ask based on your previous contact with the group / organization, but some good themes to form your questions on include: group strategy / philosophy, team dynamics among the current physicians, academic / education opportunities, the community you'll be living, and of course, compensation / benefits.

  • DODGE post-interview mixed-signals by initiating the communication process.

A significant amount of time from all parties has been invested up to this point.  Your final interaction will help seal the deal, or lack there of could potentially knock you out of consideration.

We look forward to seeing you at SAEM in San Diego on May 12-15, 2015!  Be sure to visit us at Booth #302 in the exhibit hall to pick up some free swag and register to win our giveaway - a GoPro HERO4 Action Camera!
