Houston Freestanding EDs Help Avoid Emergency Physician Burnout

Houston, TX - Houston is leading the nation in terms of the number of state-licensed emergency care facilities. As of February 2014, 54 of the 90 freestanding EDs in Texas were located in Houston. The number has only grown since then.

With many of these facilities being owned by emergency physicians, some may ask, "What is the draw?"

As of a 2015 Medscape survey, 52% of emergency physicians reported feelings of burnout. Those surveyed contributed this to too many hours, difficult patients, non-clinical tasks, and not having enough time for family, exercise or travel.

We believe that the low volumes and low acuity that many freestanding EDs experience is a contributing factor to the appeal many emergency physicians see in a freestanding ED environment.

West Texas Emergency Medicine Group Offers $500k Plus

Midland, TX - Originally opened in 1950, Midland Memorial Hospital is a full service, Level III Trauma, not-for-profit hospital totaling 229 beds.

Over succeeding decades, Midland Memorial Hospital has changed dramatically to meet the needs of a dynamic community. In May 2009, Midland County residents approved a $115 million bond to build a new patient tower, which was combined with another $62.6 million in private donations and grants. It was the first $100 million bond issue approved by Midland voters.

On December 19, 2012, the hospital opened the new, nine-story, Dorothy and Clarence Scharbauer Jr Patient Tower, staying under the $177.6 million project budget.

The new tower consolidated several West Campus operations, such as the OB/GYN unit, into the main campus. The tower also features a number of new amenities for inpatients such as an interactive television system and a motorized patient lift in every room. The hospital is licensed for 468 beds and offers several innovative programs, including the Heart Institute, Total Joint Center, women’s and children’s health care services and various rehabilitation programs.
