Houston Freestanding EDs Help Avoid Emergency Physician Burnout

Houston, TX - Houston is leading the nation in terms of the number of state-licensed emergency care facilities. As of February 2014, 54 of the 90 freestanding EDs in Texas were located in Houston. The number has only grown since then.

With many of these facilities being owned by emergency physicians, some may ask, "What is the draw?"

As of a 2015 Medscape survey, 52% of emergency physicians reported feelings of burnout. Those surveyed contributed this to too many hours, difficult patients, non-clinical tasks, and not having enough time for family, exercise or travel.

We believe that the low volumes and low acuity that many freestanding EDs experience is a contributing factor to the appeal many emergency physicians see in a freestanding ED environment.
